A brief intro to DI Analytics Platform 🚀
Hello!
This first post will introduce those of you that are new to DAP to a few basic functionalities of the platform, and provide a context so that future updates are not published in a vacuum. If you are already familiar with the platform, you probably know all this already
The Platform - broad strokes:
Our analytics platform is built in AWS, and is your one-stop-shop for all analytical data from DI. We have created a new data model which is optimised for efficient analysis, with complete data lineage and GDPR functionality built in. Additionally, we enhance this data by integrating with several external data sources. The platform holds the full history of data from all our systems, and merges them together in one data model, which creates unlimited opportunities for powerful analyses across multiple dimensions. If you have your own data warehouse, you can easily connect to the platform and export all or parts of your data however frequent you want, but you can also choose to use this platform as your only data warehouse, import any external data sources you might need to get the complete picture for your organisation, and perform all your business analyses here.
At the moment we read, clean and transform data from DI's production database every night around 3am. Additionally, we update the platform with the latest route data around 10:30, when most updates from the night's distribution should have arrived. We believe this update frequency is sufficient to serve most analytical usecases.
The Webapp:
Currently holds very basic functionality, such as access management, data browsing and Tableau analysis.
Under Users Management you can invite as many of your colleagues as you want to your organisation; simply provide their name and email address, and decide whether they should have user, editor or admin rights..
At the home page you will find a list of your Workspaces, and you can create new ones. A workspace is a place where you can invite all your colleagues, or a few of them, to work on either all the data your organisation has access to, or a subset. For example - you might have one team that is particularly interested in complaints and deviations. You can create a "Complaints and Deviations" workspace, where you bring with you only 3 or 4 relevant data tables, and invite the 2 people from that team to work on that topic undisturbed.
Under the Data tab in the Workspace you can select which tables and columns you want to include in the Workspace. Here you also find documentation for the data model. This documentation can also be found here: https://dbdocs.io/dap-docs/DAP?view=relationships
We do our best to keep this documentation up to date, but there are very frequent updates here, as we continuously expand the model to contain more data and cover more usecases.
Under Query & Export we have included a simple query editor where you can browse your data. We have also provided a few query templates to help get you started finding relevant data for a few common usecases. Use those for inspiration, edit them, and save as your own templates to speed up your work and make repetitive tasks more efficient.
You can also choose to do your queries directly in the more advanced Redshift Query editor. Simply select Redshift from the list of Tools, and you will be directed there:
Under Tools you will also find a link to Tableau. Here you can create dashboards and analyse all data in your workspace, be it from DI or from any other data sources you may have imported.
